Green Monday in Cyprus (also known in Greek Othodox as Clean Monday, Ash Monday). This day signifies the first day of Lent in the Greek Orthodox calendar. It is a period of 40 days until the start of Easter. Therefore, being a moveable feast day. Occuring at the beginning of the seventh week prior to Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday. The Green Monday in Cyprus Feast day is normally in February or March each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green Monday in Cyprus is a public Holiday, normally celebrated outdoors. Either on beaches, forest areas, or often in the fields in the villages. A traditional Cypriot celebration. You will often see many picnics taking place on beaches, in the fields, and many rural areas in the larger towns.\u00a0 The Cypriot people are such generous and friendly people. During Lent, eating Meat, dairy, eggs and sometimes fish, is forbidden in Greek Orthodox. Many people keep this fast of these foods until the beginning of Easter.\u00a0 Bakeries and restaurants always cater to those who traditionally wish to keep the fast.\u00a0 Especially traditional Lagana bread, eaten with vegetables, fruit, olives. Also, Shellfish and Calamari permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green Monday in Cyprus therefore also marks the beginning of the Spring Season. Kite flying is a way to mark this. You will see many kites filling the skies and children and adults alike partaking in this traditional Spring activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
